A Week With NO Running....

8/30/2016

I was so so excited at the start of last week - I was heading to an induction week for my new daytime teaching job (back into public schools, woohoo!) and I was feeling pumped. I'd been looking forward to this for a few months, having signed up with them around about May time. Everything was going really well: lovely colleagues, a few familiar faces, and excitement all round. That is until a mystery, and debilitating illness struck me down mid-week, noooooo....... This continued to get worse and worse until finally, thanks to a good friend, I realised that I would need to go back to hospital (I did try the hospital route on Thursday but was misdiagnosed and sent home, only for the problem to get worse. Boo....). Ok, so this was completely NOT in my plan hey: being admitted to a hospital in Vietnam and then spending the next three days stuck there before they performed surgery on me on Monday and sent me home yesterday. Definitely a low-light of my time living here. But that's life yeah? Just when you're thinking how amazing, incredible and wonderful things are, the universe seems to be a bit of a  jokester and tells you: erm, nope, here you go, have a forced week or two off.... (By the way, I'm not going to go into exactly what surgery or illness it was here, but let's just say it was extremely painful but now I'm getting much much better, so nothing too serious I hope.) I am eternally grateful for my wonderful friends who have helped me through the past week (and continue to do so) - thank you so much, I don't know what I would have done without you. Also, all the staff at Vinmec International Hospital were really great - if you have any health concern here in Hanoi I would definitely recommend them.

So, I haven't run all week and apparently I won't be running for another week either! Arrghhh, kind of my nightmare as you can imagine. Oh well. Now that I am mobile again and not stuck to a drip in bed, it puts everything in perspective anyway, and I'm just thankful I can move around again (and with no pain too, so amazing!). I will get back to running, and hopefully in time for the Longbien Half Marathon on 23rd October! This will be my next race and I will treat it as part of my marathon training for the Bangkok marathon in November.

As I can't write re: any running or training of late, this post will be another food-focused one (close to my heart).

I was really impressed by the hospital food over here hey! Seems a world away from what I witnessed during my time working in a hospital back in Oz. Here I was plied with lots of fresh, healthy meals: variations of rice porridge (chicken, beef or bean) and soy milk for breakfast, then rice, lots of veggies, chicken and fish, plus fruit and yoghurt for the lunches and dinners. Excellent foods for healing! Citrus fruits, lean protein (chicken, fish, soybeans), garlic, ginger, mushrooms, veggies... This went some way to make up for having horrible body-destroying antibiotics being routinely pumped into me. My good friend helped me supplement this with some much needed dark chocolate and other goodies, mmmmm, antioxidantalicious.... I tried to capture most meals in a photo journal of sorts:

So, at least my nutrition has been 'on point' this week despite my training being non-existent. Oh well. A sort of forced week or two of rest? There are multiple silver linings to this whole episode, one of which being my apartment now feels like a florist with the most beautiful assortment of flowers (thanks again everyone!!):
Picture

I am now keeping up the healing foods: TURMERIC, ginger, garlic, dark green veg, fruits, tofu and beans and fish, probiotic yoghurts, fermented veg/pickled veg, dark chocolate etc... Instead of running or cycling I will be walking (slowly), and taking this time to catch up on lots of typing and writing. But watch this space, I will be back to running soon!! Longbien Half Marathon and Bangkok Marathon, I'm coming for you!!

Wishing you all a wonderful week, and on that note, I'm off to get some much needed sunshine. Ahhh, so good to be free again!! :) xx

I Love Airports...

...So much so, that it seems I will visit them even when I'm neither flying nor meeting anyone off a plane. A new running buddy had the genius idea of running out to the airport (Noi Bai, Hanoi's domestic and international airport, some 20km out of town) and then catching the super handy, super cheap bus back into town. A brilliant idea, I agreed! The route out there takes you quickly out of town and then across the iconic bridge to get across the Red River, and from there past endless lush green farms and fields, and friendly folk offering to give us lifts or be our xe om drivers. What a perfect, beautiful start to a Sunday, despite my legs feeling distinctly stiff and fatigued quite early on. It didn't help that the roadsigns were seemingly drunk and all over the place: when I thought we would have had about 5km left, one sign happily told us it was a whole extra 8 km to go! We trundled on for another km or so and met the next roadsign which maddeningly told us it was now 9km to go! Hmmm.... Something was amiss here. Oh well. A few kilometres later (probably about 6 or so): we made it! A nice, slow, longer Sunday run - the longest I have attempted since the Danang Marathon a couple of weeks back. I'm sure the excellent company helped me no end with this run, so a big thanks to my running buddy! You're awesome. So far so good, re: recovery, although am feeling fatigued and a bit sketchy now - thinking it's as I had no opportunity to get a post-run power nap in as had to meet a very special friend for a quick goodbye lunch before then rudely having to go to work (teaching work) on a Sunday arvo, rude hey... Haha, all good really...

Speaking of 'work' - tomorrow marks the first day of my going back to being a day-time/full-time teacher in public schools! Eek!! Excited: It has been in the works for quite a while now. Not sure how my new schedule will pan out yet and exactly what impact it will have on my running and marathon training; only time will tell. I will either have to go back to being a super super early morning runner (of the 5am or 5:30am start variety) or may have to run at night, but then I think I'll be too busy then as well, hmmm..... What does this mean for you as a Lou's Weight Online client (or potential new client)? For those interested in my upcoming group program: Eat To Win (kicking off later in the year, on October 3rd) - not a thing will change! This program will definitely still be running, as will I (and I hope you too!) and I would love it if you can join us - we will all be busy and pushed for time, that's exactly the point: eating well and maximising your training despite seemingly having 'no' time or being too busy. However, I will not be taking on any new one-on-one clients for the foreseeable future (former/current clients, you can of course, as always: contact me at ANY time and I will get back to you ASAP. That hasn't changed nor will it). Shoot me a message if you have any queries or concerns or comments: louise@lousweight.com.au

Hmmm, I'm not going to lie: would have loved to be one of those lucky folks at said airport this morning actually getting on a flight and heading off somewhere else. Not that I don't love Hanoi still, but you know me: always keen for travelling to new or even familiar far-oft places.... Ahh but I definitely can't now - got a few too many things going on here at the moment. Oh well, just as well there are exciting things afloat locally such as the Red River Runners' social run held on a Saturday late arvo that I finally went to yesterday. This was great too: a nice 10km meander along part of West Lake and then through and around the quieter, wider streets of Ciputra close to Tay Ho. There's also Power Yoga, held at the beautiful Fitness Village which I've started attending recently, and wow, this feels oh-so-good. Lots of twisting and back stretching and all the poses that make you feel more flexible than you would have ever thought (if a little stiff and sore the next day). The class is run by Magda, and she's wonderful. If you're local and looking for a peaceful, friendly place to  practise yoga (or workout in group exercise classes, in the gym, or on a spin bike), get yourself down to the Fitness Village! You won't regret it.

Apart from the yoga, a couple of other strength training classes and a few runs this week, my training has been a bit less than I would have liked, due to a mixture of being sick with a debilitating virus for a couple of days, and a dramatic typhoon that hit Thursday evening and last til mid-arvo yesterday. Put a bit of a damper on things somewhat, but what can you do. Typhoon season apparently?

I hope you all survived the storm safely and happily, and that wherever you are in the world you are having a wonderful end of your weekend/beginning of your week. All my love, Lou xx

One Week On...

8/13/2016

My high from the marathon last week is starting to wear off, unfortunately. Just as well there are always more events to enter and train for! It doesn't help that this week has seen me do minimal exercising and running, due to recovering from the race and only doing a very light version of what I have been used to. Cue less running endorphins all round (only got two runs in this week as was testing my legs - so far, so good!) combined with lots of delicious recovery foods = I am feeling a bit heavier and things seem a bit anti-climatic after all the excitement of last week. Oh well. Everything is only temporary, and this was bound to happen.

As for my go to 'recovery' foods, well yes, there has been the usual dark chocolate, giant mounds of garlicky green vegetables, fruit (including loads of pineapple), avocados, and some smoked salmon (no turmeric as yet, weird hey? This is purely a logistical issue - having moved apartments yet again I haven't yet tracked down the facilities/pans in which to be able to make said turmeric latte, nooooo....). One such night featured smoked salmon in the form of a delicious smoked salmon pizza courtesy of 4 Ps Pizza over in the Old Quarter here in Hanoi. Here's where I have a confession: I, sometimes known as the stand-up comedienne 'Cheesy Louisey' (where my comedic focus is actually on cheese jokes and cheese puns) was hitherto unaware of a type of cheese that was deliciously brought to my attention on this particular evening. One word: Burrata.... So, before I get on and ramble about exactly why salmon is such a good healing food, here are a couple of pizza porn pictures from this particular night. If you're anywhere in Hanoi, do yourself (namely your tastebuds) a favour and get yourself down to 4ps for their burrata pizza. Vietnammm.....:

Why is salmon so good in terms of healing, you may ask? Salmon is such a nutrient dense, delicious food. Check it out:

Salmon Nutrition Facts
  • Vitamin B12 (236% daily recommended value)
  • Vitamin D (127%)
  • Selenium (78.3%)
  • Vitamin B3 (56.3%)
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (55%)
  • Protein (53.1%)
  • Phosphorus (52.1%)
  • Vitamin B6 (37.6%)
  • Iodine (21.3%
  • Choline (19.2%)
  • Vitamin B5 (18.4%)
  • Biotin (15.1%)
  • Potassium (14%)

Packed full of good stuff, not only does salmon reap these benefits: proper cardiovascular health, correct muscle and tissue development, increased eye health and efficient body metabolism, but it's the omega-3 fatty acids that act as potent anti-inflammatories, thus speeding muscles/tissue healing (whilst the amino acids from its high protein content get to work on repairing said muscles and tissues). Other awesome anti-inflammatory foods include: turmeric, ginger, tart cherries, red onions, grapes, olives/olive oil, broccoli, garlic, pineapple, fermented foods and drinks, spinach, other dark green leafy veg, walnuts and other nuts, avocado, mmmmmmm........

So, yes, food and active recovery (plus a few rest days) has seen me recover pretty well after last week's race. Now I am pumped for the next one!! Here is my wish-list of upcoming races:

 - Sapa Mountain Marathon - September (I would like to do the 42km option - was originally wanting to do the 70km option but don't think I will be anyway near trained enough for that).

 - Long Bien Marathon - October (tossing up whether to do a half or the full).

 - Bangkok Marathon - November (going to do the full here! Get maximum bang for my buck seeing as it will be an overseas trip, lol... Prolong the fun and all that...)

So, I'll be keeping my kilometres up and cracking on with my training, and aiming to have a healthy, balanced nutrition plan for most of the time (not one for extremes - it's way ok to have days/weekends when you party or treat yourself). Nutrition and fuel really is that important and makes all the difference to both your training and your results. Stuck for healthy snack ideas? Enjoy your day and week ahead everyone! If you're here in Vietnam, are YOU going to do either of the two Vietnam events above? Or why not travel to Bangkok with me for the marathon?? Nothing like a good race-cation....

A Surprising Thing Happened in Danang....

....I not only completed the marathon well under the time I had guesttimated (I was aiming for any time under 4 hours, or ideally 3:45 I would have been stoked with), but I actually came in SECOND place with a time of 3:39!! This was so unexpected and so wonderful! I am sure this was down to the following: food/nutrition, training, AND my amazing support crew consisting of not just ONE masseur but TWO - I was lucky enough to have an amazing relaxing Swedish style massage 3 days out before the race from one super talented masseur friend, and then had another super talented masseur friend on hand for immediately after the race too, along with his professional distance running advice (he is a former Olympian athlete/runner). Not only this, but amazing support and motivation from my masseur/athlete friend and another beautiful friend who came down too, and seeing them at various points along the stunning course was so so motivating and awesome. Thank you Natalie and Thomas - I am because you are: I won because you were both there and this trip to Danang was one of the best times of my life. Word.

Danang is such a beautiful place too. I am really considering a move there after here in Hanoi: fresh air, blue skies, clear and warm water  (with gentle, tiny waves), delicious food, friendly lovely people, and a quiet/chilled vibe. Here are some pictures of this incredible trip, that featured: exploring and riding to Hoi An via motorbike, An Bang beach hangs, Danang beach chilling and ocean swimming, a long run (the marathon!), sushi/Japanese/Mexican/Italian/Vietnamese food, unexpected prizes for placing second, and KARAOKE (oh yes):

So far so good with the recovery too. My legs are starting to feel a bit stiff/slightly sore, but nothing too bad or too dramatic (again, thanks to the post-race massage work I'm sure, not to mention FOOD....) I will be, of course, upping my intake of particularly healing foods as per usual after a race. Cue lots of green leafy veg, turmeric, citrus fruits, green tea, salmon, and dark chocolate, mmmmm..... Stay tuned for later in the year (October) and join me in my special nutrition for runners program - Eat To Win, to find out the best nutrition strategies for YOU for YOUR best race or best running performance yet. Nutrition is key for that pb.

I'm off for a gentle recovery walk now - I am a big fan of active recovery! Keep moving after a race but don't go straight back to running unless you have a back-to-back running event planned.... Have a beautiful week everyone, and thank you for all your kind, wonderful words/wishes in person and via Facebook, messenger, texts, and emails. I really appreciate your support and love and you have all helped me get this unexpected good result! So thanks... :) xxx
