Time for some cold, hard facts: yesterday was a really bad day. Yesterday I wanted to NOT be here in amazing Hanoi. Yesterday, I was off sick from both teaching jobs and well and truly not myself (I'll spare you the gory details). Yesterday, I was wondering what the hell I am even doing here in Vietnam. However, today? Well, today is a new day, let me tell you.

Thankfully, all those negative, apathetic things I was feeling and thinking yesterday (along with feeling quite miserable due to being ill again) all passed. Just as everything does. If YOU ever have bad days such as this, and I think it's safe to assume nearly everyone does, well it's so important to just get through them and to know they are only temporary. Channel Daniel Beddingfield of back-in-the-day UK fame and tell yourself 'you've gotta get through this'.... If that doesn't work, go food shopping and fill your fridge with fresh, wholesome ingredients that will nourish your body and soul as soon as you're feeling better (if you're sick too). Or talk to a good friend and get some very wise, valuable advice. Or all of the above!

It felt like the calm after a storm early this morning as I called in for a breakfast banh mi, courtesy of Banh Mi 25 on Yen Phu. Sidenote: get yourself along there tout-de-suite if you're in Hanoi! Delicious banh mis, with super fresh ingredients, an abundance of cucumber and coriander (no stinginess with their salad here), and lovely, friendly people running the joint. Now a day that starts with an egg and salad banh mi overlooking a small lake (not West Lake, but one next to Yen Phu Village - answers on a postcard as to its name please!) is going to be a great day. Prior to this I had gotten in a very short, shake-up, 30 minute run, before the race tomorrow.

Then it was on with one of the main events of the morning: picking up my race gear!

Picture
I love races. There's nothing quite like that buzz and ambience pre-race or even while collecting your race gear a day or so before (despite it being held in one of those giant, horrible malls). You meet instant new running friends, and the excitement is palpable and contagious.

Sidenote number 2: almost all of my recent event t-shirts have been bright orange. Does orange improve running performance and times? Or is it chosen purely for its jazziness?

I am pumped for tomorrow! I haven't run a half marathon for a while. I think the last one I did was the Kedumba trail half marathon last year, as I have been focusing more on full marathons lately. So I am excited to see what happens at tomorrow's event. I am aiming to use the race as part of my long run for the week (as the Bangkok marathon is really not far away now! Need to get a couple more long long runs in before a bit of a taper before 20th November) and will run the 11km home after the race, making it a neat 32km for my Sunday long run (I am going armed with peanut butter rye bread sandwich bites purely for the last 10 km of this).

Watch this space. Long Bien half marathoners, full marathoners, ten k-ers, and 5 k-ers - I'll see you bright and early in the morning!! All the best to everyone running tomorrow!

I'm IN!!!

I want to share my excitement far and wide re: the humble fact that I will be taking part in the famous (infamous?) Ultra Trail Australia in 2017!!!! Woohoo!!! Massive thanks to my running-partner-in-crime Marisa for making this happen and booking us a place as soon as regos opened the other day. I am PUMPED! Now just need to get some serious training in from December onwards (which really isn't that far away when you think about it, given the speed of which this year is hurtling by).

It's been a while since I did my first (and only!) 50km in beautiful Wuyuezhai, China. Two years, to be precise. I have a feeling Ultra Trail will be a harder version of the 50km too. Given the nature of the Blue Mountains. I remember the Kedumba half marathon last year, so I have had a sneak peak of part of the course. For those who don't know what I'm on about, you can check out the Ultratrail website here:
http://www.ultratrailaustralia.com.au/

Man, do I miss trail running. Now, where to find some trails in Hanoi?!

Ahh, thinking of that amazing time in Wuyuezhai now and reminiscing - this was seriously one of the best times of my life, and probably my favourite time in China - although it's a toss up between this one and the 100km challenge in amazingly-stunning Guizhou (this might even be my favourite ever China experience for a number of reasons). Here are a few happy snaps from the 50km a couple of years ago:

Hard to believe this one was only two years back - it feels a lifetime ago. Oh well - here's hoping for muscle memory hey!

Plus, I have mostly kept up my training, although the last few races and events have not been trail running as such, but on paved roads.

Next Sunday is the Long Bien Half Marathon. Then about a month later is a full marathon through the streets of bangin Bangkok! I can't WAIT for this one! If only for a chance to carb-load courtesy of the amazeballs Seven Eleven stores over there. You know it.

I am aware that I need to step up my training for this full marathon, so yesterday took myself on an early 30km training run (early, as it was neither Saturday nor Sunday, and so not the traditional domain of the long run - but being a partial cover teacher at the moment, my schedule is frequently changed at the last minute so I am going with the flow and saw this as a good opportunity to get my run in pre-weekend, and thus giving me 3 extra hours over the weekend now! Wootwoot!). Now 30km is still a long way! The run itself was awesome (taking in two laps of beautiful West Lake), but I was feeling decidedly wrecked later on, after having gone to teach my regular kids' class on a Friday night. I will be aiming to take it very easy today (having a much needed no-training/rest day today). The week has been fairly full on with lots of teaching, commuting by bicycle, and getting my training runs and a strength training session in too. But it feels GREAT! Never will I take for granted the pure joyous fact that I can walk around, cycle around and run around again, pain free and not suffering from an illness: my immune system copped a fair beating recently but I finally seem back to 100% health. Phew!!

Hmm, all for getting things in early this week/weekend, I realise this blog post is a little premature too! Oh well: going with the flow and rolling with it.

Well done to all the participants in the Eat To Win Challenge - you are all amazing! It's almost the end of our second week, and halfway through the program - seriously, would this year please slow down a bit!?

Happy eating and training everyone! For all the lady runners out there (and some dudes too of course), here you go: you're very welcome:

Three Wise Men, and Debunking Those Carb Myths....

So, am back in the swing of early morning (5 am ish), pre-work, runs once again. (This selfie was taken at about 5am) These 4am early morning starts make me very happy. They also make me unable to go out much past dark or have a 'late' one, but that's ok. The Long Bien half will be here before I know it (just 13 days away) and then the full Bangkok marathon is not long after that. Eek! Need to step the long run training up a notch.

At least I am Eating To Win! Lol... The program is now in Week 2 and so far so good - it is really helping my training and motivation. Thanks to all who have taken part so far. It's great to have you join us!

As all things fuel and food are on my mind (maybe more than usual, what with running the current group challenge online), I thought I'd dedicate this post to those energy-giving, oft misunderstood 'carbs' (and Three Wise Men, but we'll get to them) and dispute the two main things that I hear repeatedly.

1) "Carbs will make you fat." Carbs will NOT make you fat. They are your body's preferred energy source and the only fuel your brain needs too. They should make up the majority of your diet. Aim for fibrous, wholegrain, whole food options: oats, rice, quinoa, rye, pumpkin, sweet potato, ALL vegetables and fruits, chickpeas and other legumes/pulses.... So, 55% of your diet would ideally be from carbohydrates, but if you're training or running/exercising, this would go up to about 60% to up to 70% during the week leading up to a race.

2) "Carbs are bad for you." What?! NO! See the point above.

Ok, whilst I generally abhor labelling food as 'bad', this image is quite handy all the same:

Now, most of you know I love living here in Hanoi. That's no secret or surprise. I have met so many wonderful and inspiring people since moving here in March this year (although continue to miss all those amazing people back in Oz and England of course). It struck me the other day while running, that I feel particularly grateful and fortunate to have some of the most intelligent, wise, and inspiring men as my close friends (who don't really know each other either). There are, of course, many intelligent, wise dudes over here and who I am friends with, along with many a wise and intelligent chick too, but there are three very good friends who I'm particularly close to and have given me nothing but gold advice and wonderful company. Just a shout out to you three for being AWESOME and I hope you know how much I value and respect you three wise men. I'm sure you'll know who you are.

With that, it's off to do yet more lesson planning malarkey for this week ahead. Loving being back in the classroom, and the students are brilliant. I've even been covering for various primary schools (eek!) but it turns out I might be better with kids than I previously thought.

Have an AMAZING week everyone! If you're training: eat to win!!

Jungle Fever

This past weekend saw me venture down to Ninh Binh province to visit Cuc Phuong National Park - SO beautiful and so peaceful, and soooo nice to get out of Hanoi, even for a day or two. That being said, a day-trip somehow turned into a whole weekend trip due to a broken down bike and the journey taking longer than I had anticipated. Not that I'm complaining really. Could have spent days down there... Loved walking through the jungle and forests, wow-ing at the giant, ancient trees....

Upon my return to Hanoi - you know it: the Eat To Win program has officially begun, wootwoot! Today is Day 2 and I'm feeling pumped! (Despite feeling exhausted, due to other work).

I also managed to get a long run in this morning. Hence the short and sweet nature of this post - I am well and truly done in and now off to catch some zzzzzz's before another early morning and full-on day tomorrow.

Have a GREAT week everyone, and if you're joining me in Eat To Win - I'll see you in the Facebook group!
