Back Into Training

Hello everyone! I hope you're having a wonderful weekend. My weekend hasn't been filled with too much training, or too much of anything at all. Oops.. Yesterday turned into a dedicated rest day after some strong Chinese drinks on Friday night. Yuck, haven't had a hangover like that in years hey. If it had been wine induced, I could have used this excellent phrase I heard the other day:
Picture
Clever hey?? Not so clever is drinking a few too many shots of beijiu (Chinese spirit; like their version of vodka). Should just stick to beer, or wine, and I'll be fine.

Anyway, after a full on rest day, copious food and water, and the power of SLEEP, all was fixed this morning and I have finally (it feels) gotten back into the training by going for a slightly longer run: I went for 15km run this morning and it took me exactly 1 hour and 15 minutes. So, not too speedy, but ok for a casual, Sunday morning run.

I have imminent plans to go for a bike ride too. Probably an hour's worth or just under, down by the riverside in the sunshine. Ahhh, feels good to be back! (No drinking for a while for me, going on a bit of a health kick. Just can't take the hangovers anymore it seems!)

Do you suffer hangovers much? What's your favourite thing to drink too much of?

Cycle Tour of Tongliao

Oops, no blog post yesterday as I was tied up spending the day cycling around this beautiful, new (for us) city: exploring in the sunshine. No photos were taken yesterday, and apparently this is a 'blogger fail' hey. Oh well, here's a couple from a couple of weeks ago, doing kind of the same thing anyway:
Picture
Picture
Do you like our shiny new bikes?? We do, but they are somewhat painful on the arse after many hours of peddling around town. But, despite that, it was a successful day: we found copious motorbike shops (we're going to get an e-bike next week we think. So, cue LOTS more exploring further afield), a swimming pool, coffee shops, restaurants, a big market, food streets, and wide, wide open roads.

Today's run was a 12km ish run mostly through newly tarmacked woodland riverside parks nearby: the only vehicles around (once I got into the woodland area and off the main drag) were a couple of trucks and motorbikes from the construction team who are still working on these parks. My legs felt great and fresh having had a couple of days with no running and by replacing run-days with cycling and cross-training. Win.

On for my weekend is probably: some more exploring, writing, reading and maybe some more cycling. Kind of loving the cycling now I've got wheels again. What's on for yours??

Cycling in the Sunshine

There we were, vouchers in hand, excitedly entering the basement level of the hotel in order to commence our spa day:
Picture
But: RUBBISH! Apparently they do not offer this any more!! We were too late!! Admittedly, it had been last year that these vouchers were given to us after a particularly awesome session there (where we paid about 10 bucks for this excellent experience, well worth it). They did, however, offer an extensive list of other options and treatments for us to enjoy (if we wanted to fork out a fair bit of our teacher's salary, hmmm). have a look:

Now, we weren't really feeling in the mood for any scraping measles, the fire pot, or even the noble physiotherapy treatments offered (what a shocker hey), so we did what we seem to do best here in Yiwu: went cycling and exploring in the sunshine interspersed with eating and drinking:

So, my day turned out to be more of an active recovery day than I had thought it would be, but that's way ok. I was definitely enjoying every moment and appreciating the day.

Check it out, all over our city (and possibly all over China too) they have painted murals and pictures on all the many walls separating different residential areas and on the side of bridges/roads. They are amazing, and so many of them, this selection of them doesn't really do them justice (I will try to take more photos of them over the next few days/weeks), but you'll get the idea:

It kind of makes me wish I could paint or draw hey. How about you? Any artists out there??

Have a Fabulous Friday Folks!! :)

May Day

4/30/2014

It is the May Day holiday here in China, which means it's a holiday today, tomorrow, AND Saturday (which is usually a 'holiday' for us anyway). So, in true Chinese fashion, we're working the Sunday to compensate for having a holiday fall on a weekday. Hmm, I think someone in charge must have got confused re: what constitutes a holiday! Hey-ho... I kicked mine off with a speed session at the lovely track this morning which saw me doing the following: 1.6km warm-up, 5x 1.6km at VO2max pace (around 3.55 for me) with 3 minute rests in between each 1.6, then 4.8km easy pace run/cool down/recover. My calves were still a little tight but overall it was a good session. Then Husband and I went on a cycle/explore around town, drank some coffee, and we will soon be drinking beer and meeting our friends to go shopping. BUT, it's a beautiful, sunny, HOT day today, so maybe too nice to spend indoors doing our least favourite activity of shopping? Hmm, needs to be done though (Husband needs new clothes).

As for the rest of our holiday? Not sure. I have a long run scheduled for Saturday morning: I'm aiming to do around 25kms and include LOTS of steps and mountain trails. I paid the entry fee for the 50km race this morning, so this trail race business just got real.

Think we'll also be doing lots of planning of our itinerary for our upcoming amazing caravan adventure, and I'd love to do some writing and general chilling and resting. Hopefully this beautiful weather lasts all three days of it!

Last year today, I was HERE undertaking this extremely difficult, crazy adventure 'running' race on the beautiful Great Wall of China:

All the best to those runners who have gone back for a second year running - you guys are amazing! Once was enough for me, haha.

Autumnal Antics

After yesterday's freezing cold morning (yep, these three layered runs are becoming a bit of a regular thing now), it actually turned into a gorgeous, sunny (almost hot) day here. So, after work we headed out on our bicycles to a local park so that Puppy could run around and we could lay on the grass for a bit (felt SO good hey). We realised as soon as we got out the door and into the glorious sunshine that her newly purchased, super-stylin puppy jacket wasn't needed, but here's a couple of 'just-because' shots of her in it (just because she's so f'kin cute!):
Picture
Picture

As soon as we could, our respective jacket/shoes/boots came straight off for some prime time feel-the-grass action:
Picture

Seriously. Haven't tried just lying on the grass lately? Give it a whirl. Feels pretty amazeballs.

Here is Puppy expressing just how good it feels (we call her the dog of many faces - here's her best 'pissing-myself-with-laughter-as-am-thrilled-to-be-at-the-park' face):
Picture

And yes, an extra 'just because' shot of the autumnal colours of the leaves changing colour (had to get this before it is too late and they start to fall):
Picture

And back to some running musings now: Today I ran a 9km (ish) endurance pace run. It took 40 minutes. So, think that's roughly the same pace as yesterday's run. Hopefully, I can repeat this on race day. Felt pretty strong today and like I could have kept on running for many more kilometres, so that's a good sign. Also, I read a great quote yesterday, and wish I could remember who by or where I saw it, as my paraphrasing of it here is going to be much less eloquent, but here goes: it was something along the lines of that humans need and love to 'play' and that running is just a form of play, even when we try to be really good at it. This concept really made me smile at points during my run this morning, and I reflected on my 9km of playtime before the day really starts. This is getting added to my mental log of running mantras now, and whenever things seem tough or I get a little tired, I'll try to remember that it's all just playing anyway, and not to take it so seriously.

So, have a fookin fantastic Friday everyone, filled with fun times and PLAYING.

Brrrr.....

Feeling the cold here now. Wore THREE tops to run in on my long run this morning, plus the usual gloves and long running pants. Still cold now (having not moved much since I returned - trying to psych myself up to get into our cold, uninspiring bathroom). The weather report for the low temperature today says this:
Picture
But it feels more like ZERO methinks.

Still, it was nice: crisp and fresh on my run, not wet, which was a blessing, and there was the beautiful, big, orange orb of sun rising up as I ran past the eery, completely still river with its ghostly fog hovering just above the surface. However, it was not my best run. Had a lot of (womanly) pain for most of it (whoever said that exercise made it better??) but those excellent endorphins kicked in at about kilometre 15. An elderly gentleman speeding past me in the opposite direction gave me a hearty thumbs up as he went, to which I eagerly responded with my own thumb of course (the equivalent of a Chinese runners' high-five perhaps?), so this gave me a well needed boost. As did seeing a former student of mine near the end of the run and hearing an enthusiastic 'Hello Louise!'.

So, another week's training done and dusted = feeling awesome. :) Time for zao fan (breakfast) and probably more exploring/cycling, shopping and lots of COFFEE this weekend (once I get back up that is).

Have a great weekend everyone! And all the best to those running in a race tomorrow (i.e. Maggie! All the best for the marathon! What a great birthday present to yourself hey!).

Weekend recap...

11/10/2013

Well, well, well. Another Monday is upon us. Unbelievable how fast these weekends go! (And we're not even drinking at the moment, so no partying/hangover to blame for the super speedy weekend.)

It has been a fairly productive weekend. These things happened:

We doubled up two to a bicycle Bali-motorbike-style to go on a covert mission:
Picture
Picture

It was HOT and SUNNY on Saturday; we rode past our usual puppy-walking park:
Picture

There was even BLUE SKY:
Picture

We ate delicious lunches out (the usual egg-plant, dumplings, tofu, cauliflower, and other vegetable shizzle awesomeness):
Picture

We went to purchase carpet/a rug for our getting-colder-apartment floor:
Picture

We stopped for kafei (coffee):
Picture

Puppy inspected the new rug. Shortly after this she decided (contrary to what we'd told her) that it was in fact grass and to be treated accordingly (pissed on):

For some reason she is being extra cuddly and loving lately, so here are another couple of our beautiful puppy Bear, just 'because':
Picture

Hmm, exciting times yes? Haha. Lots of exploring by bicycle anyhow, and legs didn't feel tired after Saturday's run, so all good. Today was a non running day - I did some strength cross-training instead. Feel pumped for tomorrow morning's run, and for the rest of the week. :)
