I’m back from Australia. The last week has literally flown. I had an awesome, wonderful time and now it seems like a vivid dream of sorts, so quickly it felt like it went by.

I will talk about the race a little bit (as that’s maybe why most of you are here?) and then will possibly bombard you with photos of my best friend Annie and I, thoroughly enjoying our long overdue catch-up.

So, firstly – the race. This was the BEST and most well organised race I have ever taken part in. Everything was seamless and smooth, from the race bib pick-up to the shuttle bus transport to the race, to the different corrals and starting zones. As it’s their 36th event (I think) it seems they have definitely got it down pat. Unusually (or so I thought), the timing chip was actually part of the race bib and not a separate one worn on your shoe. Also, this was the first race I’ve ever run where you don’t get your t-shirt until the end of the race, just after you’ve crossed the finish line, so it means you know you’ve earnt it, lol…

The race started at 6am, but they instructed us to get there at 5am. Yep, that’s a very early start, and a fair bit of waiting around. However, this time also flew by, and after some wandering around to find my starting zone (different zones assigned by your last race time or your intended time for this one; there was zone A, B, C, and maybe D? Not sure… I was luckily in Zone A, which was perfect as I was surrounded by other runners aiming for the same pace and time as me, and so, far from the other runners being a hurdle and aiming not to trip over feet and around people in the first few kilometres, they were all on the same mission to get out there and into their race pace it seemed, and everyone flowed nicely), drinking coffee, and using the portaloos a few times, before we knew it the race had begun.

The first 10-11kms went perfectly – exactly how I’d wanted to run, although maybe even a little bit faster than I’d planned for my first 3 kms, however, this was again due to the other runners in my zone as I naturally joined pace with them – not uncomfortably fast though, just a little bit quicker than in practice (so, was 4:30 rather than the 4:45 I thought I’d go at). It is a very beautiful course, and I got to run past my new apartment after the first 3 kilometres (and again on the return at about 17 ish kms).

At about 13 kilometres in though, things were suddenly not so good. It’s hard to describe but I couldn’t keep my pace up, things felt a definite struggle, and I had gone freezing cold/cold sweats/shivery type feel, where I was thinking, ‘wouldn’t it be nice to curl up under a blanket on the side of the road right about now’. Noooooooo! What was happening?? I kept going, but couldn’t keep my pace up for the last tempo interval. So, instead of running at 4:10 ish, I was running at 4:35-4:40. The mantras were helping (particularly ‘you’ve done it before, you can do it again!’), as was the image of seeing Annie at the finish line, but I just couldn’t get my speed back up and felt very strange (I think maybe I was dehydrated, despite trying to be well hydrated, or the recent long traveling was in hindsight not the best approach pre-race?). I just wanted to finish and thought I’d not care about my time or a PR anymore – just finish. I didn’t even look at how long it was taking me and thought for sure I’d be something like 10 minutes slower or more than last time. Before I knew it, the finish line was in sight and I tried to run faster and stronger over the line, as they called out my name and commented on all the race gear I was wearing (I did take my camelback after all, with the intention of not having to slow down at the drink stations – an idea that was working fantastically until I started feeling weird and slowed down to grab extra water anyway). That was it, I’d done it. As I focused on not vomiting and collapsing (managed not to! Success), I checked my time. Wow, I HAD done it after all! A new ‘official’ pb (as in, a race pb, even though I’ve got another pb in training). It wasn’t the 1:30 I was aiming for, but was a whopping EIGHT seconds faster than my Shanghai half in December. Haha, but a pb is a pb right?? So, my official time for this one was 1:34:23. Yes, every second counts, I suppose. Hmmm, months of training and achieving a ‘training pb’ of 1:31 all added up to me getting pretty much the same time as my previous, not-so-trained-for half marathon where I wasn’t focused on my pace or looking at a watch? I think the next race I’ll run I will run ‘naked’ and not focus on a time. I know I can do it theoretically and in training, and maybe I will try and beat my time again in the future, but for a while I may just get back to having fun while running. This race was a struggle, but I tried my best and did the best I could do on the day.

When the race was over, there was a smiling Annie waiting for me, amazingly she’d managed to spot me and we met up as planned, and I then followed the lead of some other runners and went for a 15 minute ‘ice bath’ in the beautiful early morning, winter ocean water. This was a first for me, but I am quite sure it helped – my legs recovered pretty fast and well, albeit with a touch of quad soreness the next day when walking around shopping and looking for restaurants. It took us almost two hours to make it the 5km back to our apartment!  And almost another 2 hours (once showered etc) to order, wait for and enjoy our breakfast after that. I suppose thousands of people in town for the races adds up to a lot of queuing for taxis and food and everything. After that, we relaxed and rested for a while (courtesy of copious cups of tea on the sofa together), and eventually ended up going out for celebratory drinks and, of course, more food, a fair bit later than planned. The next day was spent doing yet more eating in wonderful restaurants (there will be a fair few food-on-a-plate pictures, sorry if you’re not into that, but I was very excited to eat some awesome Australian fare that I’d been missing, so loads of fish/seafood and avocado, yumm…), shopping and walking around, and drinking. Oh and taking lots of pictures of ourselves to remind us of our trip, haha. And all too quickly somehow it was Tuesday early early morning and I was getting my taxi back to the airport to commence the looooonnnnng journey back to Husband and Puppy in China. It went something like this: taxi, plane no.1, walk through airport, plane no.2, taxi, train, bus, walk…. (over 1.5 days).

Here is my holiday in pictures, to give you a better idea of this race weekend and holiday with my bestie:

This morning I went for a run (about 8km ish) in my new shoes, to test out my legs and wear in the new shoes. Check them out, my shiny new pair. For those of you who know me in ‘real’ life’, no I did not choose them because they are pink! That is just an added bonus.
Picture
Tick, tick, on both counts. Legs feel fine and shoes went well. Oh yeah – absolutely NO pain or problems with my legs during the race in the end, phew… And I don’t think I even thought about them during, I was just focused on my struggling pace and labouring breathing instead, lol…

So, to sum up: I had an AMAZING weekend in Australia with the Beautiful Anne-Marie, I ran the Gold Coast half marathon (a beautiful, flat course, that I would love to run again), I achieved an official pb, AND upon checking my results a couple of days later, I found out that I came 110th woman (out of approx. 5000 – I will check again), and 26th in my age category too! Not too shabby.

Now it’s back into the packing and cleaning before we head off early Saturday morning on our amazing caravan tour through China! Now, if only there was a dimmer/slow switch for this time business. It really is going too fast. (I also need to catch up on all the things I’ve missed on various other running blogs since I’ve been gone, however this access to the internet will be short-lived, and during our caravan tour I don’t think we’ll have any internet access. So, it will be a whole month’s break from blogging and emails etc soon.)

Bye for Now, and Seven Things You May Not Know About Me

This will be my last blog post for a week. Don’t miss me too much! Haha… The reason being, is that tomorrow morning I leave for my ‘quick trip’ back to Oz. Hmm, when first working it out and booking flights etc, it seemed a quick 3 day visit back to the land of Oz, to run the Goldy half marathon and see my bestie. Turns out there is THREE days of travelling, one and a half ish either side of my actual time in Australia, courtesy of us not living in bigger city or a transport hub. So, tomorrow morning I will make my way up to Hangzhou (the capital city of Zhejiang province) and stay the night there before checking into my flight on Friday morning. I arrive into Australia early on SATURDAY morning though, due to a long (cheap) flight. Oops… (The return journey is equally a mission, but I prefer not to think about that right now…)

Picture
So, today is the day for packing, organizing, and then stressing about how much STUFF we have accumulated when attempting to do some more of the bigger packing, for our impending leaving of this school when I return from the Gold Coast.

This morning I completed my penultimate training run: an easy paced 6.4km run, in the STINKING heat and humidity! It was a particularly sweaty affair, but no leg pain dramas or otherwise. Phew…

Kristina over at Blog About Running (http://www.blogaboutrunning.com/7-things-about-me-you-might-not-know/) gave me a shout out for this Very Inspiring Blogger Award/Game (thanks Kristina!), so I’ll be passing that on to THESE fellow (and awesome) bloggers. You’re up! Kim (http://day-with-kt.com/), Amy (http://runwritehike.com/),  Karen (http://moreclutterfromkaren.blogspot.com/), and Kristen (http://www.glitteranddust.com/)!

Enjoy. So, the ‘rules’ are to share seven things with your readers that they don’t know about you, and then pass it on and nominate other bloggers who can then share their seven things.

Hmm, so for those of you who know me in the flesh, these may not be that surprising or new information, but hey-ho, here are my seven things you may or may not know about me:

  1. When I was about 11 or 12, I won first place in the Kent Championship Fencing competition (under 14 female category), held, not surprisingly, in Kent, UK. En garde!

  2. I think I am very dichotomous in the way that I love to be SUPER healthy and into fitness one day, and then would gladly be heavily into all kinds of partying and debauchery the next day. It’s good to have balance I guess?

  3. I can speak French (but I am quite rusty).

  4. When I was younger my ‘hilarious’ (ironic) running joke was to tell people of my plan to migrate to America and find a rich husband to settle down with. Hmmm, yeah, I know, missed my stand-up comedy calling with that one. However, I did start a 4 year degree reading American Literature at Sussex Uni in Brighton, UK, where the 3rd year was to be spent in the states, so this gave a lot of weight to my ironic ‘joke’. (In the end, I quit this course two years early and went back to work/live in London for a bit while I figured out what I want to ‘do’ with my life. Still figuring it out today, haha…)

  5. I would love to go back to Peru (and other parts of South America) and have a few ayuhuasca experiences (again, with the figuring out life malarkey…)

  6. I am very clumsy. No glass, cup or plate is safe in my hands. Husband has a special, affectionate term for me in this sense. Now, I hope you don’t take offense at this, and he says it in a completely loving, jokey tone, but he calls me Edward-Penis-Hands sometimes, as I, ahem, f*&k everything I touch.

  7. In about 5 to 10 years time, I hope to be living in an Earthship home, off the grid, and self-sustainable, growing veggies, making wine, writing trashy novels etc… I would love this be in Australia or Bali, or both, ideally.

So, that’s all from me for now. The next time I write here will be after the Gold Coast half and when I get back into town next Wednesday. Wishing you all a wonderful rest of your week and weekend ahead, and I can’t wait to tell you how it all went (successfully I hope!)

Tell me something I may not know about you!

Fankle Pain

6/25/2014

The rain has stopped! Hurrah!! However, looks like the humidity is returning in full force, so I’m sure there’s yet more rain in our not-too-distant future.

The morning I went for a slow, recovery paced run, 11km, on a regular route down by the riverside. The niggling calf ache/pain (I guess it's really my upper ankle, or 'fankle' - fat ankle - as its painful and slightly swollen/has a bruised feeling) was still there, and it felt like it got better and then worse, then better, then worse again throughout the very slow run (20 minutes slower than usual). In fact, my legs felt tight and achey all over, and by the end of the run my right hip had started to ache and feel strange too. What’s going on? It feels like I have just run a hard race or a marathon yesterday or something. Perhaps, this is a delayed reaction to my 50km trail race (back on 7th June), and I didn’t get away with such an awesome, quick recovery after all? Hmm… Not good. But, I think I will do the sensible thing, and cancel my runs for the next two to three days, so the rest of this week, and rest my legs (albeit for the usual walking and cycling as transport, and maybe some yoga too) and see how they are feeling on Monday’s planned 9.66km easy paced run. I am still thinking about the 16km run I should be doing over the weekend though, hmmm. If I can, I may also get back to the hotel’s swimming pool for some active recovery pool running/jogging.

I will also be eating lots of healthy, healing foods, and will be aiming to get more sleep than I’ve been getting recently.

I hope my legs are back to normal by next Saturday!! How annoying. It’s got me worried that maybe I have reached my peak during my training and that when I come to run the actual race, I won’t be able to repeat and emulate the successes I have had when training. Hmm, maybe running an ultra 50km trail race just one month before this half marathon wasn’t a great training idea, in hindsight…

Have you got any secrets/tips for a speedy recovery?

How many days would you take off from running if you’re feeling sore?

Aaaand, a few shots of the beautiful Gold Coast, in the hope that this mental motivation helps my legs return to 'normal' in time for next week (and ideally in time for Sunday so I can get my final long-ish run in):

Mantras

It's still raining on and off here in not-so-sunny-at-the-moment Yiwu, and yes it's still incredibly humid. Both these weather conditions can only mean one thing: another wet (soggy?) run this morning. The drizzle I can take and handle fine, but the humidity? That is still a challenge. Especially when trying to run at a faster pace. This was the case this morning, and I had the following planned: 1.6km warm-up, 9.6km at high aerobic pace (between 4:21 and 4:45) then easy paced/whatever pace up to about 21-22kms. It ended up being: 1.5kms warm-up, then 8.5kms at high aerobic pace, then 5kms at 'whatever' pace, then 1km at high aerobic pace again, then the last 5.5kms at a 'whatever' pace again. The humidity was really getting to me as I got nearer to the end of the aimed for 9.6kms high aerobic pace portion of the run, and even my best mantras didn't help in the end as I made a deal with myself that I would go until 10km, and not the 11.2km that I was aiming for, but then later on I would run another kilometre at the faster pace. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I suppose it gave me extra training for speeding up on already tired legs and for pushing out a faster pace/finishing strong when you have already run 15kms or so. I am SO glad there won't be the humidity issue when I run the Gold Coast in just over a fortnight's time!

Talking of mantras. Do you use any particular mantras or sayings when you run? These are some of my favourites:

 - Strong, Strong, Strong....

 - If you can do this, you can do anything...

 - You got this!

 - You can do it (in a Rob Schneider esque manner)

 - Dig deep.

 - You can do hard things

 - You can do more than you think you can!

What mantras do you use during a race or during training?

After I'd got the 'hard' part of my run out of the way (or most of it anyway) I reckon I must have been giving off happy-runner-vibes or palpable endorphins perhaps as there were so many 'hellos' from passer-bys and I made 3 new running friends! One of them was telling me to look up the name of Yiwu then 'runners' on a Chinese search engine (just about to do that now) so perhaps there has been a running group right here in little ole' Yiwu this whole time?! Only took me two years to find a running community, haha. Anyway, one of the runners joined me for about 4 kilometres and another joined me for a later 1-2 kilometre stretch (the third was a quick hello/which races have you ran/goodbye before he sped off again). It was nice passing the time with someone as I ran. I haven't often gone running with another person before, but every time I do, I think 'why don't I do this more often?' It wouldn't work for speed days or when I'm trying to keep my pace up, but for runs where you're just running/jogging along and chatting? It's nice hey. Good way to practice my Chinese too, but, d'oh! Now we're leaving! Maybe there will be a running community up in Inner Mongolia??

Are you part of a running group where you live?

Have a Wonderful Weekend!! Good luck to those who have races this weekend, or to those out for a long run (or short run, or any kind of run). You can do it!

Good Things Come to Those Who...

...wait / get told 'no' and thus we go and do something else for the day. Further to our: we thought we were going to have an awesome relaxation spa day only to be told 'mei you' ('no / don't have' in Chinese), we then remembered we had yet more vouchers to a different hotel (also nearby) which offered time in their gym and swimming pool. So, yesterday we thought, why not try there instead? (I don't know why we haven't used all these vouchers before, but hey-ho, we're getting there in our last 4 weeks of living here.) Imagine our delight and joy then when we discovered that it wasn't just a gym and pool that was on offer, but that they too had saunas (and one each apparently, which was awesome - as at the other hotel it was a sauna in the guys' changing room but only a steam room for the ladies) and a giant, cavernous spa that lay adjacent to the large (and empty) swimming pool, complete with fake rocks and palm trees. This hotel's facilities kicked the other hotel's arse!! The only downside was that instead of 12 glorious hours as advertised by the other joint, they limit you to two, but it was just enough time (then we came back to continue the 'rest' portion back in our cool, air-conditioned apartment, ahhh...)

We took many photos of the place (as we're tourists like that) including photos of the very unflattering swimming caps that are mandatory here and the amusing (to us anyway) English signs (my favourite being the 'Men Stop' one, tee-hee. This was at the entrance to the ladies changing room, however there was no 'woman stop' sign for the men's room?). One photo I neglected to take was that of the ashtray in the gym, complete with recently stubbed out ciggie. Only in China hey. Oh, you can't tell from the photos but the no smoking sign shown below was placed, of course, above a table that featured a large, ready-to-use ashtray.

So, here is our day (or some of it) in pictures, starting with a massive, tasty breakfast, before we began cycling over to the hotel.

Haha, maybe we took too many pictures of a hotel's pool/spa?? I think we were excited to be swimming again. (I know, I had a wonderful swim in the last hotel I stayed at in Beijing last week, but Husband hasn't been in one since Bali last August! Shocker.) It felt soooo good to be splashing around in the water. After 30 very sweaty minutes on the gym's elliptical (active recovery! It must have been years since I was last on an elliptical in a gym, but I was excited to use it to test my legs/continue the active recovery practice) I spent the next hour ish with Husband in our miraculously private pool and spa (lucky us) before then sweating it out some more with a couple of sauna sessions. Ahhh, so refreshing. Kind of felt like we were properly 'on holiday', if you know what I mean.

Now, if you've tuned in or found yourself here because you were actually after some RUNNING news/info, then fear not! I'm back! Yes, I finally went for a run this morning (well, it's been a whole week, and I was getting itchy feet, plus my legs have been feeling fine) as I couldn't resist: perfect morning for it: slightly cloudy and wasn't too hot yet, and yay for all the active recovery, as my legs feel great. It was an 11kms easy paced/recovery run, and although I felt a little bit slower than my usual pace, hopefully this is just temporary and I'll be back into it (properly) next week. Just over 3 weeks to go! Can't wait. Just a bit excited for the Gold Coast half marathon (plus seeing some of my favourite people in the world, albeit too briefly and just for a day or so, but hey).

What are you looking forward to/excited about that's coming up?

Do you like to hang out in spas/saunas too?

Have you been to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia? Or anywhere else in Oz?

Active Recovery

6/10/2014

Ok, it's now Day 4 post-race, and my legs feel great! Pretty much back to normal. This is GREAT news, as, if you've been reading for a couple of weeks or more now, you'll know that there's the Gold Coast Half Marathon coming up in just over 3 weeks, where I'm aiming to try and beat my last official PB of 1:34. (I am going to try for 1:30!). So, fresh legs are needed.

However, I don't want to jinx myself or to have spoken too soon, so will still be taking it fairly easy for the rest of this week, and will probably do no running (if I can bear it, I may crack over the weekend). So far I have been heeding the advice of aiming for active recovery. That is, still moving, albeit different muscles/movements/exercises, and thus allowing the lactic acid in your sore muscles to dissipate faster, plus you're getting various stretching in too. So far, so good! I have been: walking (our Puppy, so maybe 2 ish kms at a time?), casual cycling around the corner to the shops and restaurants, and this morning I did about 40 minutes of yoga.

I read that unless you have an injury as a result of a race, then absolute bed rest and putting your feet/legs up for a long time leads to a much longer (frustrating) recovery time. However, obviously getting enough sleep is important too. As demonstrated by moi this morning - slept in until half 8 and then ate breakfast and went back to sleep for another couple of hours! Wow, that never happens. I am more than ok with this; my body clearly needed it.

Here are a few articles if you want to read more re: this active recovery vs. complete rest debate:

http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/training/active-versus-passive-recovery.html

Ok, here's to carrying on this active recovery and fingers crossed my legs continue to feel fine - just off into the hot, humid day to day said Puppy for a walk. Enjoy your day wherever you may be!

What do you like to do after a hard/challenging/big race? How long do you wait until you run again?

One Step At a Time

5/22/2014

This morning I FINALLY made it for my track session. Hallelujah! It's only taken me 4 days... (I know, I was going to do it yesterday - instead I went for a beautiful run in the peaceful drizzly afternoon followed by 15 sets of our apartment stairs = job done.) So, this is what happened early this morning: 1.6km warm up/easy pace, 9.66km at threshold pace (yep, you read that right - 9.66 fricken kilometres!), then 1.6km cool down/easy pace. Phew. I did it! This is the longest I have run at this quicker pace (between 4:07-4:18) Feel awesome that I completed it.

Not gonna lie - the first 7-8kms or so were tough. Really tough. Maybe from the not-much sleep I've had this week or maybe from some really rubbish womanly pains or whatnot, but whatever, I digress and ramble... So, I had two choices: I could do maybe half of my planned session, or just stop and call it a day early, OR, I could keep going, focusing on ONE kilometre at a time (and at times, one hundred metres at a time, or even one step.) I am so glad I chose the latter. And with each kilometre closer to the end of the faster threshold pace section, it got easier and easier, and I felt miles better. I am feeling pretty confident about my improved pace now, and have shown myself that I can run faster for longer. So, am giving serious consideration to running most of my next half marathon at threshold pace, with a 1.6km ish warm-up and a kilometre or so, in between each 9.66km at threshold, at an easy pace. Something along those lines anyway.

This is my plan for my next half marathon, which is: the Gold Coast half marathon!!! Yes, it turns out I can make it after all. I am pumped! However, I now have a 50km trail race to run exactly one month prior to the Goldy race, so I hope my legs recover quickly enough for me to put this new plan into action. Watch this space.

In other news: it's FRIDAY! Kind of ecstatic about that. Hope you all have a blinder. Tell me something you are doing today / over the weekend!
