Marathon-Training-Massages

6/29/2016

My running this week has seen a couple of moderate-length runs, one long run, and a couple of strength training sessions. Then I upped my training over the weekend just gone by focusing on that lesser favoured aspect: rest and recovery. You've no doubt heard the old adage re: rest days being just as important as the training days? Well, this is usually all very well in theory, but it's hard sometimes to actually stop and take two days off in a row, allowing for complete rest and recovery. But not this weekend. I went on a mini two-day holiday over the weekend (back to super fun Bangkok!) and did something completely out of character for me..... I did not take my running gear. Giving myself NO opportunity for a run through the streets of Bangkok once again, I had decidedly unequivocally that the weekend would be solely dedicated to rest, recovery, and bucketloads of fun. This was after my long run early on the Friday morning, so my legs were well up for this idea, being fairly fatigued and whatnot.

The other thing that I did to aid my rest/recovery portion of marathon training this week was to get two awesome massages whilst over in Bangkok. I love getting massages and whenever I finally get one again, I tell myself I'm going to make it a regular part of my routine and training, They are so beneficial! Professional runners make sure massages are a regular fixture in their routines, so why shouldn't the everyday, non-professional runner follow suit?

Massages are so beneficial for runners for these reasons:

1) They help repair any adhesions and minor scar tissue between fascia and muscles whilst relaxing said muscles. These adhesions/scar tissue lead to abnormal movement and impaired mobility that leads to injuries, so put simply: massage helps prevent injuries.
2) They promote faster healing and reduce pain simultaneously. Again: so essential for recovery.
3) They help relieve stress, which again helps to prevent injuries. A less stressed/happy runner is a healthier, less prone to injury runner!
4) They help recovery by improving blood circulation.

What type of massage is the best for you as a runner, you may ask? Word on the street (ok, word online) is that the 3 top massages of choice for runners are Swedish massage, Active Release Technique/Therapy, and deep tissue massage, but really any massage of your choice will help to some degree, whether just to relieve stress and tension. I reckon those amazing Thai massages where my limbs were stretched and pulled this way and that definitely did some good. LOTS of good. I came out feeling amazing and as if I'd just spent the last hour ish doing some sort of yoga or stretch class. Highly recommended!

If you are planning on adding massages into your routine regularly and in leading up to an event or race, then its important to note that the experts' wisdom is to not have one too close to race day. Aim for 2-3 days prior to a race, so as not to undo all your hard months of dedication or training work by having sore post-massage legs. Similarly, wait 1-2 days after a hard session or hard race before getting any deep tissue work done.

When I wasn't getting pummelled and manipulated as part of those wonderful massage treatments, you can probably already guess what the majority of the rest of my time in Bangkok looked like. Oh yes, it featured delicious green and red curries, spicy fresh green papaya salads, pad thais, mystery green things and other snacks on sticks, fresh fruit, spring rolls, spicy soups, garlicy morning glory and other stir-fried veggies,  mmmmmmmm..... I LOVE the food in Thailand! Loving the fact that Bangkok is so close (and so cheap) to pop over to, as it's only an hour and forty minutes from me here in Hanoi, but yet it's a world away in terms of both food and feel of the place. I love both places, don't get me wrong, but they are just so very different.

Here are a few shots of those amazing dishes, haha, some 'tourist' photos from the weekend that was all too brief:

What about YOU? Do you regularly get massages, as part of your training program? Do you regularly take rest days?

Have a wonderful week one and all! xxx

Business in Bangkok

6/22/2016

It seems the usual question I get asked here (after the requisite 'so where you from?') is: are you here on business or holiday? And my answer: both. Having needed to come here on official visa business (I now have a brand spanking new business visa of which to return to beautiful Vietnam on, woohoo - job done) I thought: why not combine business with pleasure and see a bit of a new, amazing country? The beauty of both writing and running an online business is that you can do them from anywhere, providing you've got a notebook, a laptop, and an internet connection. Hmm, however the wifi and internet has been surprisingly rubbish here (for a huge, modern city, I am quite surprised...). Not that this is my excuse, but I haven't got as much work done here as I had initially planned, but that's ok. I can play catch up and be all kinds of productive when I'm back in hot, humid Hanoi.

However, it's not all been this either:
Picture
This was definitely (unfortunately?) the minority of my trip. The rest included: self-guided walking tours around Bangkok to find the Vietnam embassy and various shops; a cycling tour of lesser seen / non-touristy parts of town (including a place called something like 'Bang-kachow!' Best name ever); a couple of runs, including a long run yesterday morning (always a great way to see a city and explore); visiting temples and giant markets (before realising and remembering that I really dislike touristy spots and crowds of tourists! Lol); meeting fellow business-trip travellers and Bangkok locals (in small restaurants and then in fancy rootftop sky bars) and a whole lot of wandering around eating and drinking delicious things (the best part of any trip! Naturally...). Now I could probably ramble for days re: the amazing array of food stalls littering the pavements and set up underneath all the bridges early in the morning for the commuters, along with the ubiquitous fresh fruit stalls scattered liberally throughout the streets, but instead, I'll keep it concise and short&sweet - here are the top 5 things I love about Bangkok, in no particularly meaningful order:

1) The bright pink taxis! (and pink buses, and general use of pink):
Picture
Picture

2) The ways cats seem to be really well loved and treated and respected.
Picture
3) Everyone is so friendly! And so welcoming too. Even when not getting anything from it (i.e. it's not a scam or a tourist thing), for example, chatting to tuk-tuk drivers while passing and showing them on the map where I'm walking to, and then they proceed to enthusiastically welcome me to their country and chat for ages about where I should see and where I'm from/what I'm doing. Everyone has been lovely here. And so polite with each other too! Even saw people give up their seats on the subway for others and let people pass first in the street - after life in China this still comes as a pleasant surprise.

4) The FOOD.... Now this one could in it's own right be a separate post. Nay a separate feature or book. But here's a taster of things, a sample if you will, of the amazing food that's on offer over here (I think I will need a lot longer than just 5 days to be able to try it all). Seriously, even the 7 Eleven stores had exciting and mysterious treats on offer (the way to my heart people: make me a dessert and make sure it's either got green tea or some kind of bean in it, i.e. kidney beans).

5) Beautiful parks and green places are never too far away. Nor are amazingly beautiful temples and buildings. I also LOVED getting out of the city as part of a bicycle tour and got to legit cycle through the jungle. This was awesome!

Bangkok has also given me time to chill and reflect on a few personal things as well. It's taken me way too long, but have finally realised that the only way someone can actually manipulate or hurt you or make you feel bad (not going into details or anything though) is if you keep letting them! The power is in your own hands. Simply don't connect with that particular person or give them any power over you = extreme happiness and calm and peace. Ahhh... Why has it taken me so very long to figure this out? Oh well, better late than never I guess....

Now it's back to Hanoi for a catch up with some very good friends, and to get stuck back into work. Happy Monday everyone!!

Cat-ual Representation of How Hanoi Makes Me Feel...

You see how happy this kitten in this here pic is? Well, think of that as a factual representation (cat-ual representation?) of just how happy living here makes me. I am eternally grateful for all the wonderful people I have met here so far, and feel so damn lucky. And happy. All. The. Time. Hard to pin it down to any one thing, but between the teas and coffees on peaceful rooftop balconies, swimming in the sunshine with friends, running around West Lake and joining yet another running group (although still missing you Wootbags and five30s back home for sure!), eating mountains of garlicky green veggies and tofu (amongst other delights), visiting cat cafes and endless cafes in general, dancing like a fool and acting like I'm 18 again, teaching teenagers about food (oh and English too of course, lol), writing more of my 3rd novel, and collaborating on various projects with people here, suffice to say I am just a little bit smitten with things here. Ok, a lot. Things just seem to get better and better, and add in to this that one of my greatest friends is soon coming over for a visit from England? Lou = ecstatic... So hurry over Kim!! But I digress, or ramble, or have gone off on a happy tangent. So, enough about that - on with the running update (this is after all: predominantly a running blog, or used to be...)

This past week saw me only get in 1 regular length run, 1 speed session (with the running group here), and 1 long run. In between these I chucked in a spinning class and bodypump class, and the requisite rest days (I had two this week as my legs were feeling decidedly sore and fatigued following the awesome trail run last Saturday). So far so good! Feeling better and better about the Danang Marathon in early August. Not sure it will be a pb (as I don't feel I am in the same condition as last year) but you never know. It will be a great way to see Danang anyway, as I've only ever been to the airport there before heading down to nearby (and beautiful) Hoi An.

For those who are doing the Gold Coast Marathon this year - not long to go hey!! I am looking forward to living vicariously through your updates and posts about this (having had to pull out of this event due to emigrating to Vietnam, d'oh, how was my timing?!). Are you all on track with your training and nutrition? You're going to have a ball! Seriously one of my favourite events - so well organised and such great crowd support too. Oh, and very easy on the eye too.

Have a great week everyone! If you're local to Hanoi - do yourself a favour and get down to this swimming pool that's on the edge of West Lake up near Yen Phu, called Thang Loi (I think?). Beautiful views and such a chilled fun time.

Happiness Is.... A Trail Run On a Saturday...

I don't know how people do it over here. Have normal/nice hair. Mine swings between being one giant sweaty dread-lock, and being huge due to the crazy humidity. This was me trying to capture it in all its post-run, maheusive glory. I don't think it quite does it justice, but you get the idea. Reminds me of one of my latest favourite jokes (sorry again to those who will have heard this live): Which cheese was big in the 80s?....

.....PERMesan! (geddit?!)

This picture was taken shortly after finishing an epic day of breaking down on motorbikes, 17km of trail running through some beautiful foothills around a lake, swimming in said lake, delivering really bad (so bad they're good?) puns and jokes, drinking cold delicious beers, eating my favourite tofu and garlic-y green veg ('morning glory' over here, I kid you not), and riding in and out of the city in the hot-as-hell sunshine.

So, yes, you read that correctly! Got a well overdue trail run in, thanks to a new running friend with wheels who kindly offered to give me a lift out of the city to such a beautiful spot. So beautiful, and SO so hot and humid. This was a tough run. Tough, but so very worth it. I was just getting over a cold, which I suppose added to how tough it was, but oh wow, that humidity is a killer! And the scorching hot sunshine and heat. Let's just say that jumping into the lake (when we were nearly done, only a couple of kms left, so pretty much at the end) felt oh so good. Amazingly good. As did the first cold beer sitting back at the restaurant we had left the bike at. Oh how I've missed a good trail run! Took Glenrock for granted a bit having it practically on my doorstep in Newy. Here are some pictures from my Saturday run, and a couple of touristy quintessential there-are-no-rules-so-let's-stop-on-the-bridge-and-take-happy-snaps shots:

The rest of the week saw me get most of my usual runs and strength training workouts in, and I even went to a well overdue speed training session with a local running group too! This was awesome, but again, so humid and sweaty and intense (like camping, lol). It featured various drills such as high-knees and side-steps, and some faster paced/sprinting intervals. I will definitely go back this week. I feel my training has been lacking any kind of me pushing myself, and I've mainly just been cruising around casually. But now that regular speed training and trail running are now a part of my life again? Oh happy days :)

It is now Day 6 of my Jump Into June 30 Day Challenge that I launched on June 1st, and so far so good! As stated previously, I am doing the challenge too, right along with everyone who has signed up, and I'm happy with my progress so far. Nothing like a bit of friendly support and motivation to keep you on track - and I have definitely needed a kick to get back on track and stop partying so much. Jumping Into June has definitely helped so far! Watch this space....

Now I better go and finalise a few things prior to our last fermentation workshop that's taking place today. If you're in Hanoi and fancy coming along to learn all about fermented food/drinks and their amazing health benefits, along with how to make ginger beer and kombucha tea (with scoby samples available!) then please send me a message, there are still a few spaces left for today's session: info@lousweight.com.au

Have a wonderful week one and all, and please please stay safe out there, especially those back in Oz at the moment. Sending you all my love and best wishes and know I am thinking of you xxx

Perfectly Imperfect

So, we all have good intentions. We set plans, we embark on new journeys and ventures, and we have goals that we aim to reach (and do reach!). But things don't always go according to our plan. We can't be 'on point' and 'winning' 100% of the time. Why? We're human and infallible and that is WAY OK... If you're eating healthily and keeping active MOST of the time, then the occasional debaucherous weekend or extra few drinks or eating something less that favourable (or at least that won't help your goal or running training) is not going to hurt in the long-run. It's all about balance and keeping things in perspective, and not being hard on yourself or beating yourself up over unplanned events or deviations from your ideal healthy eating plan. I am all about not being too strict or extreme, and really, we are here to experience life and enjoy ourselves too: so, why deprive yourself of new experiences, new foods etc... If you feel like it's not in keeping with your overall goal, and you dislike that sketchy hungover feeling the next day, then that's fine - just get back on track as soon as possible: you won't have ruined all your hard work and healthy lifestyle by one or two days off. Just aim to not make it a regular occurrence, or then it really will become the norm. We are creatures of habit after all.

You've heard the sayings: 'first you make the habit, then the habit makes you', 'practise makes perfect', and 'you are what you eat'?? All so appropriate here. What we do on a regular  basis and what we choose to eat and drink, all form who we are, both inside and out. The more you practise something, or the more you exercise that particular neural pathway, the stronger the habit becomes. Eventually the brain will automate it as much as it can as this helps it to save energy for other tasks, and this is why habits are so hard to break - you can never actually get rid of any habit/neural pathway, but you can either tweak an existing one (and replace a potentially unhealthy current reward with a healthier option, thus keeping the habit loop a current one) or can build new habits/neural pathways and repeat them again and again until they become the new norm and favoured habits of the brain, eventually automating these new healthy ones too. It sounds boring, but achieving health and fitness basically comes down to repeating the same thing over and over, to get your results. The occasional slip-up or less healthy food/drink/weekend can be an anomaly but shouldn't be the norm, but nor should you throw in the towel and think it has to be all over just because of it.

This is why it's so important to have support and motivation when you've got a particular goal or aim in mind, and it's another reason I'm so excited to launch my challenge in 2 days' time! I will be both hosting the challenge and participating in it - nothing like a 30 day challenge to get back on track, and I am keen to have a bit of a health overhaul so that these party weekends don't become the norm for me (as they are on the verge of becoming - side effect of new friends in a new city and country I suppose). So, come June 1st, I will be well and truly jumping in with the other participants - not going to be extreme or deny anything, and will still be drinking the occasional beer or G&T, but I will be a lot more focused, and will plan my drinks beforehand if I am aiming to go out, amongst other things....  If you too want to join us, here's the link:
http://lousweight.com.au/main/page_jump_into_june_challenge.html

Aand,
the running part yes? Can't leave that out, lol... Not much to report I'm afraid! Just the usual few 12km runs and a longer 24km run on Saturday, along with interval and strength training and the usual cycling around. I am aiming for some speed training this week with a local running group, fingers crossed anyway, so watch this space.
And speaking of you being what you eat - sign up here to get some ideas for healthy snacks for runners:
