Evening Running

9/29/2014

I take my hat off to those of you who can go to work all day and then get out there for a run after work. I did this yesterday, but I'm pretty sure it will be a one-off. My body clearly prefers the early early morning time, and later in the day, well, my legs sort of feel a bit, meh... Or perhaps it was being the first run back after a cold (thank you for your lovely messages! I am heaps better now). Anyway, I tried, and a slow, less than perfect run, is still better than no run at all methinks. What I did was, so that I wouldn't talk myself out of it, or convince myself that there are so many other things I'd rather be doing after work (i.e. eating, chilling, eating) I got into my running gear before my double lesson of the arvo (I teach a large group of nursing students from 4:40-6:30pm twice a week). Crazy, yes? Going to 'work' in running gear. (Crazier still would be having work on a weekend to make up and compensate for a holiday that's coming up this week, but let's not go into that again.) Ahh, but there was a method to my madness, namely being that for half of their lesson I wanted to discuss sports, fitness, and exercise equipment. Sooo, I could point talk and then to my trainers, running tights, camelback etc. Yeah, the main reason might have been that I wanted to get out the door and into the balmy evening as quickly as possible, and that I did: 6:30 on the dot and I was out and setting off on my run.

The evening was not too cold, not windy, and felt kind of balmy, as I ran through the dark on one of my usual routes. It is a totally different experience running under streetlights than running as the beautiful, orange orb of sun is just making its presence known, and although the park was lit up beautifully and felt quite romantic (had I not been there all alone!) I just couldn't shake the thought of wishing it was done and over already so I could be eating dinner and relaxing with Husband. I think, perhaps, for me, running in the evening or afternoon time, or any time when I may usually be hanging out with Husband or friends, seems a bit anti-social, or even feels that I could be missing out?? Yesterday I was craving some sort of tasty pancake wrap thing that they make here, and my thoughts were pretty much on: buying dinner, having a shower, eating dinner, and planning lessons for tomorrow. Which makes for a less than thrilling run!

Oh well. The great thing about running, and anything else in life, is there is always tomorrow. A bad run today can lead to an amazeballs one the next time. Hopefully, anyway.

Picture
Anyway, now that I'm feeling heaps better and all but completely recovered from this cold (still have just a tiny bit of a manly voice happening) I can get back into training, and hopefully, will remember that I am very much a morning exerciser! (Despite what I tell myself some mornings, when I'm 'too tired' to get up, so then postpone it til later on. Hmmm, note to self: this means you probably won't work out on that day.)

Do you ever run in the dark?? (It seems to be dark already when I come out of lessons at 6:30pm now! Another reason to stick to my early morning runs methinks.)

Too Busy to Blog?

So it seems this blogging malarkey may be reduced to every other day now, or every couple of days. My profuse apologies in case you're an everyday reader! But alas, somehow we have been landed with a busy schedule, and although going from 10 hours of teaching per week to around 16 doesn't sound like much, it is making a huge dent on our usual 'free' time. Hmmm... For example, yesterday we didn't finish 'work' until the grand old time of half past six in the evening!! This is a new teaching experience for us. However, the enthusiastic, lovely students we teach are kind of making up for the hectic schedule, so I'm sure we'll get used to it.

In fact, this morning I went for a run with one of my said new students. As you may know, I'm usually very much a solo runner, however running with someone else was pretty good! We ran for about half an hour and at a very comfortable, slower pace than I am used to (actually started off uncomfortable as it felt strange to be actively slowing the pace down, at first...) but chatted the whole time. I'm sure there's some kind of valuable lesson here re: the benefit of friendship and slowing down occasionally as opposed to always running for at least an hour or more and at your hardest effort (usually).

Picture

I have another running 'date' on Thursday with another friend. That will be on the university's sports track, so that will be a first for me here. Looking forward to it.

In between yesterday's busy teaching schedule I did manage to get some strength training and the usual dog-walking in, and tomorrow I have an early morning yoga date again. So, pretty on track with my fitness, however, it's not too running-heavy nor geared towards my upcoming half marathon in October. I think I will rectify this with a weekend longer run to make up for less running kilometres during the week.

In other Tongliao related news: It's starting to get a fair bit colder here now - quite autumnal. But still hot and sweaty in the too-crowded classrooms during lessons.

That's all folks. Have a super day!

What's your usual finishing time from work? (Ours used to be 4pm at the latest! Oh Yiwu, how we miss you...)

Two Timer

Yep, that's two days in a row where I've been for an awesome, early morning run (rather than managing every other day or every third day). I'm on a roll here - two times the fun in two days! This morning's run was a perfect (I think 12kms?) run through some shady woodland paths that run alongside a kind of marshland section of the river that they seem to be regenerating or refurbishing (can you refurbish a river??). It was the first run in a long time where I wore long running tights on. Hmm, think the weather is starting to turn as it was decidedly chilly this morning (and last night). It was also the first time since the Gold Coast half in early July that I tried to pick my pace up and run a bit faster. For about half a km I ran 'faster' but no idea re: the actual pace as I was Garmin-free. It felt really good to test my legs and run fast again, if only for a short distance.

Now, something completely unrelated to running but something that made me very happy yesterday: I had two classes yesterday, lovely students, no dramas, everything going as planned and to time. Then at the start of the second class a boy stands up and says: "Good morning Teacher! I would like to sing a Mongolian song for you." He then proceeds to sing a very beautiful song to myself and the whole class. Well, I was so impressed! Such an amazing voice and such a lovely gesture. I was trying to ask him what the song was about, after I had thanked him and expressed my 'wow', when a girl stands up towards the back of the class, saying: "Good morning Teacher! I would also like to sing a Mongolian song for you." Then she comes to the front of the classroom and blows me away with her amazing voice and song! Wow, incredible talents. What a way to start a lesson, and so welcoming.

After the two morning lessons, Husband and I had a very relaxing, chilled afternoon consisting of hanging out in our bedroom, having picnics in bed, watching things on youtube, talking and discussing life and the world, and general total relaxation and LOADS of sleep. We'd forgotten how tiring this teaching malarkey can be perhaps, haha.

What's your favourite way to relax or chill when you're feeling oh so tired?

Rain and Red Bayberries

6/27/2014

Update for today: 1) it's still raining; 2) my legs are still tight/sore (but a little bit better I think?); and 3) it IS the shoes!!! Noooo.... I should have clarified the other day, that I have two pairs of running shoes (one about 2 years old, and one about a year old, the latter I was planning on racing in) and when I slipped my older trusty pair on yesterday morning to go somewhere, my legs and feet felt fine, no dramas. However, when I put the slightly newer (but still needing to be replaced, they are well overdue too) pair on and skipped out the door to take Puppy for a quick walk when the rain subsided a bit - boom, instant calf ache/pain, and also some foot pain too (the balls of my feet). Hmmm, so it's safe to say that I will NOT be racing in these babies next week. Looks like I'll be back in my older pair, as they don't seem to give me the grief of the other ones, and for some reason don't seem too worn out? (Which is crazy as they are well, well overdue for a change.)

Yesterday we went back to the hotel pool for some excellent sauna and pool jogging/running/playing malarkey. This was GREAT, and I hope has helped my legs? Felt great to be splashing around and occasionally stretching in there too. Managed to do about 50 minutes in the pool! This was a mixture of pool running/jogging, stretching, doing random kicks while holding onto the side, and a few laps of 'proper' (sort of anyway, I am not a good swimmer AT ALL) swimming. Wow, let me just say that, after ONE lap of 'swimming', I was extremely puffed and feeling my heart rate soar, and would swiftly get back to pool jogging instead. I am not a swimmer hey. This is crazy yes? As Husband is a swimming teacher (as well as English teacher and all round Champion/wonderful man). He did try to teach me back in 2012 in New Zealand, but to be honest, I don't like swimming, so we let it slide. However, maybe, just maybe, in the future I like the idea of doing a triathlon, or, dare I even say it, an Ironman!?! So, will eventually have to conquer my fear (loathing?) of swimming.

The first 25 minutes or so in the pool were just me by myself (while Husband was sauna-ing) and, pool running by yourself? Yes, the time goes SLOWLY (I hear you, Kristina!). It was only when Husband joined me and we added in lots of funny aquarobics-style moves, and backwards jogging, funny arms/faces combos, that the time flew by. A few super-hot (are there any other types? lol) saunas later and skulling of a litre and a half of water = feeling awesome.

When we got back to school we went to the leaving 'party' for Grade 9 students (kind of a speech/presentation event with music performances etc) - these were my students last year, and now they are leaving this school in order to go on to high school next term. They are all grown up! Literally. Most of them have shot up and now tower over me.

My former student friend Jenny must have heard my call for increasing my intake of healing vitamin C and antioxidants, as she arrived early in the morning with a basket of these amazing, juicy, delicious little fruits (called 'yangmei', or red bayberries), and told us of the party later in the day and asked whether we would come. There were more in the punnet, but, erm, as previously noted - they are delicious! (Thanks Jenny!) So, a fair few have gone already:

This last shot is Husband and the Principal of the school - a lovely, very chilled guy (like all the teachers here). We often call him the Prime Minister or President as we see him coming, lol, as in 'Look! It's the President!' Lovely guy, and has always made us feel very welcome and respected/valued.

It's easy to see why this town is so lush and green and colourful, what with all this rain! Here are a couple of shots that Husband took yesterday, and I love how colourful and full of plants/trees this school is:

Picture

Another highlight from yesterday was seeing and talking to (via the power of Skype) my BEAUTIFUL nephew! (and my bro, my sister-in-law, and my mum too, of course). He has grown up so much since I met him last year. He is about 14 months old and gorgeous. Not sure when I'll get back to England to see him in person again, so for now I suppose he'll have to go on thinking that Aunty Lou lives in the computer.

I'm off to do some (indoor and safely out of the rain) yoga now. Have a Super Saturday!!

Have you seen/tried those fruits before, where you are?

Are your relatives nearby or are you spread out across the globe too?

New Shoes and New Jobs

6/24/2014

Another week, another random pain, hmm, what’s going on? Today’s random (and I hope one-off) pain was in my lower right calf, and then another niggling (but more subtle) similar pain occurred in the left calf towards the end of my run too. The pain wasn’t too extreme, just annoying, but in the end it caused me to reduce my last tempo interval by a kilometre, as I decided to listen to my body and call it a day earlier than planned. (Today’s run was as follows: 1.6km warm-up, 2x 4.8kms at threshold pace with 3 mins rest in between, then a final 3.8kms threshold pace instead of a third 4.8kms interval, then the 1.6kms cool-down.)

I have an awful feeling that this week’s random pain may be a shoe related issue. I.e. that my shoes are well overdue for a change. I have read that you should change your running shoes every 800kms or so. Now, I was planning on getting a new pair at the expo during the marathon weekend in the Gold Coast, but now I’m not sure if I should wait and run in the shoes that I’ve got and have been training in, or buy a new pair and hope I can break them in in time for next Saturday’s race, or run in my older, even more worn out but trusty pair of shoes. Hmm, what to do? Or, maybe it has nothing to do with the shoes and is all in my head?? I hope so.

Something that helped immensely today, and not just with the run, but with the actually getting up and out there in the, yes you guessed it, continuous pissing down rain, was a mantra courtesy of Kristen at Glitter and Dust (http://glitteranddust.com/), about not trading what you want most for what you want right now. Thanks Kristen! This actually woke me up, as I was midway through a random dream re: eating a chicken burger (even more random as I have recently gone back to being mostly vegetarian, along with Husband who is newly vegetarian) and was wondering in the dream if I was awake or dreaming this, and if I was awake then why was I eating a chicken burger so close to getting up for my morning run? Then it struck me, oh it must be a dream, and the mantra came in, adapted to suit the occasion, and spurred me on to wake up as I told myself: ‘don’t trade sleeping in again for what you want most Lou!’

I wish I’d remembered this phrase yesterday afternoon though, when I absolutely traded in what I want most (to get a new PB at the Gold Coast half marathon, and thus, sticking to my training schedule, rain or no rain) for what I wanted right then: going for beers and snacks of our favourite marinated cucumber dish and edamame beans, followed by dinner with a nice bottle of red. So, no, yesterday’s run was out the window! Oops…

Another awesome mantra that helped a lot this morning was courtesy of Kristina over at Blog About Running (http://blogaboutrunning.com/) where I reminded myself that ‘I’ve done it before, I can do it again’. Thanks Kristina!!

I have written on here before about how sad we will be to say goodbye and how much we have loved working here. We also often say how this is the best job we’ve ever had and that it doesn’t feel like a job. There’s been no criticism (‘constructive’ or otherwise), no dramas, and no stress. We have been able to plan our own lessons and teach what we like and use whatever method we choose to, and have always been praised and appreciated. The working hours are great as are the perks of the job, and the other teachers are very friendly and warm and welcoming. If you like the sound of this teaching job, then read on: there are two vacancies here at the school we are leaving soon! It is a great position for a couple, or for two single teachers. If you are hold a TEFL or TESOL or other teaching certificate, and would like to come and teach in China, then please get in touch and send me your details, and I can pass it on to the woman in charge of hiring foreign teachers. Here are some more details about the job:

- Work just over 10 hours a week. (Sometimes less when there are exams, sports days etc.)

- Accommodation provided (fully furnished, utilities paid for, all mod cons, air con, TV, internet etc)

- Bicycles provided too!

- Airfare reimbursed at the end of the contract.

- Extra expenses reimbursed at the of the contract too. (For telephone, medical, and travel.)

- Medical insurance covered by the school.

- After the initial visa to get in the country, the school pays for your health examination, resident permit and all renewals etc.

- Breakfast and lunch provided 5x a week.

- Work only Monday to Friday, and usually between 10am and 4pm.

- Lots of time off and freedom to explore this and other cities.

- Teach 13 to 15 year olds (depending on which grade you teach), and between 22 and 44 students in a class or half class.

- Must be a native English speaker.

I’m sure there are lots more details I could tell you about, but if you like the sound of it so far, then please do get in touch! They are looking for someone (or two people ideally) to arrive in late August, for the beginning of term on September 1st.

Here are a few photos to give you an idea of where we live and teach:

I hope the school finds some new teachers in time for September. Of course, we'll naturally be jealous of whoever takes our place! :)

So, tell me, what do you reckon I should do re: my shoe dilemma?

How often do you replace your running shoes?

What Wonderful Wednesdays Feel Like, and Bloggers' Block

6/3/2014

Wonderful Wednesdays begin with… a session at the track. Nope, I’m not kidding. Just got back from my final speedy session pre-race on Saturday, and wow, have I turned it around with my attitude towards the track! Was keen as to get out there this morning, and when I got there ran the following: 1.6km warm-up, 9.66km at threshold pace, 1.6km cool down. Had to slow down slightly around 7kms in as the security guard had come to find me and was waving me down with a package that had arrived in the mail for us, how’s that for service?! So, I ran half of my workout holding a small envelope, but anyhoo, a great run nonetheless.

Let me tell you about these friends I’ve made down at the track. They are definitely the silent type, and mostly they like to quietly cheer me on as I pass them, while they sit at the edge of the track in the long grass. One is a redhead and one has black hair, and they are pretty damn cute. Since I don’t take my camera with me when I go for a run, this is a photo I’ve stolen from google images, but you get the idea:

Picture

Just call me the Cat Whisperer. (Do you ever wonder if animals that have an affinity with you are maybe past souls/people you have known?) Shhh, don’t tell Puppy. She can be such a jealous bitch when we show love to other dogs, so I’m sure she’d be the same with cute, little cats.

Apparently blogging and writing posts on here are a lot like running for me: if I don’t do it bright and early in the morning, then there’s a good chance I won’t get it done at all, or it becomes a struggle making time for it later in the day, as things crop up and get in the way. For a couple who have just over ten hours of solid “work” per week (it’s in quote marks as it doesn’t really ever feel like work) our day can get surprisingly busy (yes, this always shocks me too). Yesterday was one of those days.

It started out all well and calm enough, and yes, although I was dog-tired, I still dragged myself out of bed early-ish (about half 5 I think) and nursed a couple of green teas for a while before heading out (in the already hot, humid day) for a 12km easy paced run. As soon as I got back from this is was rush, rush, rush, as I was trying to get showered, ready and leave it just long enough so as to hit that magical refueling period of time (refueling nutrition nirvana?? From 30 minutes to an hour after working out) yet still make it to school breakfast on time, or at least before they close for the day (there is a daily cooked breakfast as well as a school lunch here. Like I’ve said before: good gig). I made it (just), then shoveled down a breakfast of champions: vegetable noodles with added chilli and chives, boiled eggs, steamed bread, and some hot soy milk. However, this ‘rush, rush rush’ pace was then set in place for the whole day. Or so it seemed.

A ‘quick’ trip to some shops turned into a longer trip than first anticipated as apparently I had to wait for them to even open (at the, what seems, crazy late time of 10am!) so I killed time by mooching around in Starbucks with a strong, brewed black coffee, rather than cycle home again until nearer the time; it is now too hot for multiple, sweaty bike rides – we’re definitely back to multiple-cold-showers-a-day weather here.

From said (annoyingly longer than planned) shopping trip, the day then escalated into a busy day of organizing various things (offficial things to do with our apartment back in Oz, upcoming travel plans and reservations, and getting yet further red-stamped certificates for Puppy for our upcoming July China tour – and hence, an unforeseen afternoon trip to the vet’s yesterday too) before we had four back-to-back classes where we gave each student (about 44 in each class) their one-on-one final English oral exam. All of these exams took place in the hot, outdoor corridors, adjacent to their classrooms. Phew….

So, to now cut myself off from rambling about this any further: the day got away from me and therefore a new blog post just didn’t eventuate.

Not least because of something (which maybe simply by rambling on and having the written form of verbal diarrhea on here this morning, I have overcome anyway before ever getting to the point and writing about it?) which can only be described as ‘bloggers’ block’. I.e. Not having the foggiest of what to write. No inspiration. No original (or otherwise) thought for the day. Nada. Zilch. Zero. Hmm. Maybe some more sleep was all that was needed (finally got some awesome, quality sleep last night – I think due to having a total technology ban on myself from early in the evening – took myself off to a cool, dark room, and boom: loads of sleep ensued = success).

But, seriously. Anyone else experience this? Writers/bloggers’ block?

Sure, I could probably have dashed out a few sentences of how I went for a run / my legs feel great / I’m tired / It’s only two days until I leave for Beijing / yada yada yada…But to be honest, apart from the weirdly busy day that got away from me, I also just didn’t know where to even start with the blog post. So, umm, I didn’t. I left it. I procrastinated. I did other things. Then I went to bed extremely early with neither internet nor even an air conditioner turned on (I clearly wanted NO electrical lights or sounds at all hey. The only sound was a gentle whirring of the ceiling fan. Ahh, bliss…).

Aaaand, low and behold: you leave it long enough and your blank post turns into this: a sizeable chunk of a blog post (who cares that it’s been quite nonsensical for the most part?!) Ok, ok, sorry – I will reign in the weirdness now. The point is that I was drawing a massive blank in terms of writing, and more to the point, was aware of maybe boring you guys with what I had to write about (my run / the weather / our job etc). Surely, it would have been like every other post I’ve put out there thus far, and surely you guys reading it would be bored of that by now?? Hence you’ve got this weird ramble from me instead, oops… (Maybe I should have kept things simple after all, and short and sweet. Something like: Ran today. Tired. Busy. Started exams with students. Not much else to report. Oh: excited for Thursday….)

So, tell me (if you’ve stuck with me this far!) do you ever get writers’ (bloggers’) block??

Do you procrastinate with things much? (I am a huge procrastinator – very much a list maker and tea-break-er).

Gonna Miss These Guys

Said our goodbyes to the happiest, loveliest, funniest bunch of kids yesterday. They are our last class on a Friday afternoon, and just the best, happiest students we've had the pleasure of teaching. After other, more challenging classes throughout the week, they never fail to make us smile and forget any troubles. We will miss them a lot! Word must have got around that we will be leaving soon and thus not teaching them anymore after today, as there were shouts of 'no! You can't leave us!' as soon as I entered the room, and mock crying as we said our goodbyes. One girl gave us the loveliest, beautiful handwritten card/letter telling us how much she likes us and how much she will miss us. I am so touched:

No running or working out today: official rest day. Phew. Apparently I needed it - slept in til the grand old time of SEVEN o'clock this morning! This is something of a rarity hey. Maybe all the 4am and 4:30am starts have finally caught up with me.

Any rest days out there for you today?

Do you sleep in at the weekend? (I try to but fail apparently.)

Enjoy your weekend!

Tuesday's Training Update, and Why-oh-Why is it Wednesday Already??

Oops, forgot to write yesterday. No run yesterday - I swapped it for some yoga in the morning, followed by lots of cycling around in the beautiful sunshine as we explored parts of town we hadn't been to before as our students were having exams all day (= no classes for us). So, more of a cross training day. However, I must get my running legs back today. Namely some stair running. I'm planning on doing the steps of our apartment building, maybe 25 or 30 reps of them (7 story building), and I'll try to count them today, so I get a more accurate description of this run. Later, if the weather is still nice I might also get my easy paced 9.66km that is on the schedule in (after work that is).

That's about it from me here in China. Short but sweet (ish?). Arrghhh, is it really Wednesday already? Can't we pretty please have another Tuesday-exam-day, please Universe?? Oh well. Enjoy your day everyone!

Rest Day = Workday?

5/3/2014

Today is SUNDAY yet we will be at work. Just seems so wrong. Oh well. Lucky it’s work we enjoy and doesn’t feel like work, so all good really. We have three lessons on for today, and I’m doing ‘body language’ with my students this week, so lots of acting and charades for my classes today. Should be fun.

Apart from that, today is my rest day of the week, after meeting every exercise goal and plan that I had for last week. Feels great to complete everything and tick it off (I am old fashioned I guess – use a proper pen and paper system and write what I plan to do in my diary).

After yesterday’s awesome long run, I spent the day eating, sleeping, watching a long documentary with Husband, before going out to eat and drink some more. We went to one of our favourite restaurant and had a few beers to start. Some men from another table came over to toast us and have a drink with us, urging us to ‘gambei’ (down in one) our drinks. It is impolite not to, so, when in China and all that… Anyway, later we headed back over to their table to return the ‘favour’, and sat there for a bit of a chat (half in English, half in Chinese, so probably a fair bit of confusion all round). They had already eaten (a feast it looked like, judging from the many empty plates on their table), so we ordered some food that we asked to be placed back on our original table, and we’d go back when it was ready. One of the dudes we were with had had a skinful it seemed, very blurry, but very happy and chilled, no drunken aggression or anything, so they started to head off. The other one came up to me and was trying to say something about money for the food, or I thought maybe he was trying to tell me that the food had arrived back at our table. No, he was trying to tell us that he had paid for our meal! We tried to say no and that there was no need etc, but he firmly insisted, saying we are friends and it is already done, no arguments. Sooo kind and lovely and generous. And still amazing to me. I don’t think that would ever happen in Australia or England – strangers randomly paying for a couple’s meal and lots of drinks, and a couple who they had only met very briefly too. But, seems this is the norm here, as often we’ve been out with Chinese friends and they have beaten us to the bill or insist on paying, and we’ve seen others at restaurants insisting too - almost violently in some cases we’ve seen, as other patrons have been physically struggling over who gets up first to pay the bill.

This town we live in is so friendly and loving. We are really going to miss this place.

Here are a couple of pictures from one of our other favourite restaurants over here, where the day before yesterday Husband was taken in to the kitchen to be shown by the amazing Chef how to make his favourite dish that we routinely order (a sizzling egg-plant dish – ‘qieze’). He filmed the genius at work before we got straight into the delicious feast he’d whipped up (the egg-plant dish, sizzling tofu (doufu), egg and tomato, and green beans - some of our favourites over here). We were there with our good friend and her daughter Lu-Lu, who will both soon be heading to Australia! (Yunbo, her husband, is already there, and they will go over later to join him and get Lu-Lu enrolled in an Australian school).

Ok, it’s off to work I go soon. So, happy Sundays everyone! Have a Funday-Sunday.

Does anyone else work on the weekends?? Hope yours is a good day all the same.

WHY Does It Always Rain...

4/21/2014

…when I have plans to go to the track?? Not keen to sprint in the wet, so opted to change up for my tomorrow run and this morning I did an easy paced 12.8kms instead. Fingers crossed this rain pisses off in time for tomorrow’s run at the infamous track!

Not much else to report: gloomy, drizzly weather and lessons as usual (we think). Surely they are due for some more exams or some sort of outing day, or any other reason why we will not be required, haha, come on Universe!

Have a trippy Tuesday everyone!
